PRU WEST COMMUNITY MEDICAL OUTREACH (PRU WEST DISTRICT, BONO REGION)

Achieving a universal health coverage by 2030 as proposed by the world health organization is a collective responsibility of stakeholders, duty bearers, policy makers. Community medical outreaches and free medical screenings are one formidable way of bring affordable and easy access to healthcare to the deprived people.

Needscare Foundation Ghana, in collaboration with the MP for Pru West Hon Stephen Jalulah (Deputy Minister, Roads & Highways) carried out a medical outreach program in the Pru West District, Bono East. The theme for the program was; Achieving Quality, Affordable
and Accessible Healthcare in the Pru West District.

The outreaches occurred in two phases (10 days) of five days for each Phase. Phase one covered communities like: Dama-NkwantaB, Buipe, Abease, Cherembo, Beposo
Phase two also included communities such as, Prang, Abua, Komfourkrom, Zabrama, Yapper, Benim, Baaya
The medical team conducted screening of the people in the following area; Malaria, Typhoid, Hepatitis B, HIV, Hypertension, Eye screening and Dental screening. During the screaming exercise it was observed that majority of the people has chronic hypertension that they are not aware of, other diabetes mellitus and eye conditions such as cataract and glaucoma. It was also found out that other conditions like enteric fever were prevalent among the people due to the nature of their source water system. A total number of 10,056 cases were seen in both phase one & two of the program and these included children, young adults, adults, aged, pregnant women, etc. with all of them given required medications with respect to their condition. Other medical conditions were referred to Hospitals. It is therefore recommended that such outreaches will be organized within such communities on regular basis to help detect and prevent non-communicable disease and any other related medical conditions in order to promote good health
and lifestyle.
